The relaxation of these rules affects only a small number of carefully selected passengers — mostly high-status frequent fliers who have been invited to participate in a test phase of the Transportation Security Administration’s new PreCheck program.About 40,000 domestic travelers have passed through airport screening under the relaxed rules in the month since the pilot program began at four airports, according to John S. Pistole, the T.S.A.’s administrator. For the 99-plus percent of us without top-tier status lacking an invitation to participate in PreCheck, the rules remain in place. Shoes and jackets off, laptops out of their bags, liquids and gels on display in see-through bags.

Discounted sale fares, intended for leisure travelers, are currently only being offered over Thanksgiving and the Christmas holiday. This updated pricing strategy is designed to keep leisure oriented sale fares out of the reach of business travelers.

During the depths of the recession, fare rules that prevented business travelers from taking advantage of leisure oriented fares were relaxed in order to stimulate demand. Examples included reducing the advance purchase requirements from 50 days to as few as 7 days and removal of the Saturday night stay requirement. These rules are back, and most carriers have either raised or removed discounted business class fares when demand is seasonally strong to prevent cannibalization.

Carriers are blocking more seats from advance-seat selection, especially for low-fare passengers. More crowded planes also make it tougher to get a desirable seat. As a result, more travelers are feeling pressured to pay a fee and reserve a seat rather settle for an assigned one—which could be a middle seat or not located next to their family members. Worse, those without assigned seats stand a higher chance of getting bumped from a flight.

On some Frontier flights, one-third of all seats require extra fees or higher fares to reserve in advance. AMR Corp.’s American Airlines, which recently increased the number of seats it reserves as “preferred” seats requiring a fee or elite status, says a “majority” of its seats are still available unblocked. Delta Air Lines has been studying a preferred-seat fee plan, and an announcement is likely before the end of the year, industry officials said. Also coming next year, United Airlines will drop a perk that lets the lowest level of elite frequent fliers reserve Economy Plus extra-room seats in advance.

Spas have re-engineered their menus to offer 30-minute-or-less treatment options to attract business travelers, according to the the International SPA Association. About 75% of the spas surveyed by ISPA last year said they offer express treatments at 30 minutes or less. That’s compared to about 40% a decade ago, according to SpaFinder, an online spa directory that named express treatments as one of 10 top trends for 2011.

“The trend really started to skyrocket in the last recession,” says Susie Ellis, SpaFinder’s president, noting that business travelers and spa-goers alike are watching their budgets. Shorter treatments are cheaper.
